Ray Liotta , Unforgettable
April 20, 2014
As a young Catholic girl I eagerly counted the days of Lent in anticipation for Easter Sunday. My parents worked tirelessly to provide us with special clothing and Easter baskets filled with candy and oversized chocolate bunnies nestled in technicolor hay . At the time, I took it all for granted not knowing how much effort went into
preparing the complex celebration.
Now, as an adult, I realize how much they sacrificed and how deeply committed they were to keeping all but the joy of the day from us.
My father is a WWII Veteran survivor with a medal filled wall of honor. My mother is a survivor of a childhood steeped in the pain and fear of the Great Depression. They taught me to always behave with honor and kindness. Even when confronted with disquieting betrayal, never lose your dignity and remain loyal to those you love. And to the best of your ability, always protect the vulnerable; especially children and the elderly.
There have been times of conflict, confusion and adversity when my behavior may have caused harm or distress to those I truly love and admire.
For this, I can only ask for understanding and forgiveness with humility and shame.
I offer deep gratitude to those who have helped me succeed in my life and my art. And to those who have sought to selfishly impede my endeavors with relentless cruelty and public embarrassment, I offer my compassion and forgiveness. I hope they find the redemption and serenity they need.
An artist will always find a form of expression. A survivor will always find another way. I feel blessed to have the soul of an artist and the heart , mind and legacy of a survivor.
Tangible fortune, fame and power are meaningless. Dignity, grace and honor are what we should strive to attain in life; especially in the face of rampant cruelty and suffering.
Cherish the day and find comfort and grace in knowing that the lives you touch , if not today, will one day learn great appreciation and respect for all you have meant to them.
